Denpasar. A 34-year-old Iranian man was arrested on Monday evening at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport for attempting to smuggle more than 20 capsules of crystal methamphetamine into the country.

“The modus operandi and type of crystal methamphetamine is the same as that swallowed by seven Iranians arrested previously,” Chief Comr. Kokot Indarto, head of the Bali Police’s anti-narcotics unit, said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Early this month, Ngurah Rai customs officials arrested seven Iranians for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country by swallowing hundreds of methamphetamine-filled capsules. The drugs had a total street value of about Rp 4 billion ($420,000).

The suspect, identified as Shahbazi Saeid, arrived on a Qatar Airways flight on Monday evening in a group with eight other Iranians. Customs officials became suspicious when the group appeared nervous as they passed through the customs checkpoint. The Iranians were stopped and police took them to a hospital for CT scans.

“The results of the CT scans showed that only Shahbazi had cocoon-like capsules in his stomach,” said Faried Silby Barcea, the head of the customs office overseeing Bali and Nusa Tenggara.

Police found 22 capsules containing a total of about 200 grams of crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of around Rp 400 million.

The suspect reportedly told police investigators that he flew in from Istanbul, with Jakarta as his final destination.

Kokot speculated that the crystal methamphetamine was being readied for New Year’s celebrations, when drug prices are expected to rise.

If found guilty of drug smuggling, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 10 billion.

Seven Iranians Arrested at Bali Airport For Drug Smuggling

Seven Iranians have been arrested for smuggling methamphetamines into Bali by packing the drugs into capsules and swallowing them.

Each of the suspects swallowed between 50 and 100 capsules, police said.

Bali Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Gde Sugianyar told the Jakarta Globe on Thursday that the capsules were not damaged while they were inside the suspects because each was covered in six to seven layers of plastic wrap.

According to Sugianyar, the suspects arrived at Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai Airport at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. They flew from Istanbul, Turkey, to Doha, Qatar, before arriving in Bali. A customs officer became suspicious after noticing that one of the stomach of one of the suspects, Daryoush Omidali, looked big and hard.

The customs officer took the suspect to the Bali International Medical Center Hospital in Denpasar and an X-ray scan revealed 100 methamphetamine-filled capsules inside his stomach. Officers conducted the same medical inspection on six other Iranians and found a total of 271 capsules in their stomaches in various quantities. The other six suspects’ names were Mehdi, Bahman, Mohsen, Alireza, Masoud and Saeid.

“Total evidence was 371 meth-filled capsules with a total weight of two kilograms,” Sugianyar said.

He added that the suspects planned to transit in Bali for two hours before continuing the journey to Jakarta by a domestic flight.

DENPASAR (Indonesia) - SEVEN Iranians are being held on the holiday island of Bali after trying to smuggle hundreds of methamphetamine tablets in their stomachs, Indonesian police said on Thursday.

The group arrived at Bali's main airport on Wednesday and aroused suspicion because at least one of the travellers had no luggage, Bali police spokesman Gde Sugianyar said.

The alleged trafficker was taken to a hospital and 100 methamphetamine capsules were found in his stomach, he said.

'At this time, seven of them have been arrested,' Mr Sugianyar said. 'We've confiscated 371 capsules of methampetamines,' he said, estimating their total value at about four billion rupiah (S$589,000 dollars).

More than a dozen Iranians have been arrested in Indonesia since October for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 13 million dollars worth of methampetamines into the country.
