An Australian man has been arrested in Bali for allegedly possessing a small quantity of heroin.

He is the fifth Australian detained in connection with drug offences in the past three months.

Massimo Mancini, 45, who had moved from Melbourne to work training bar staff at a club in Bali's Legian area, was arrested at home.

Indonesian police say they had been given information about the man from members of the public.

They found a half a gram of heroin in his pocket.

Police say if found guilty, Mancini could face a maximum 10 years in jail.

Just weeks ago, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer warned Australians about the risks of drug possession in Indonesia after a series of arrests, most notably that of Schapelle Corby, who could face the death penalty if convicted of importing marijuana.

A 45-year-old Australian man arrested in Bali for possession of heroin has been visited by consular officials.

Massimo Mancini, from South Yarra in Melbourne, was arrested last Thursday in Bali's Seminyak district with one-tenth of a gram of heroin in his shirt pocket, police said.

He was the fifth Australian arrested for alleged drug offences in Indonesia in the past three months.

Australia's consul in Bali Brent Hall said Mancini was being held at police headquarters in Denpasar while he was being investigated.

"Our consular staff have visited him and he is receiving consular assistance," he said.

The arrest follows on from four others on the holiday island.

Brisbane man Christopher Currell, 37, was arrested in September for allegedly attempting to send 55,000 ephedrine tablets - used in the manufacture of amphetamines - to Australia and faces 15 years in jail.

Chris Wardill, 27, and Andrew William Say have also been arrested, while Gold Coast woman Schapelle Corby, 27, has been accused of attempting to bring 4.1kg of marijuana into Bali in a body board bag in October.

Indonesian prosecutors plan to push for the death penalty for Corby, who insists she is innocent and knew nothing of the drug.
