Update on Tallaal Adrey Campaign.
Martin Hodgson - Advocate - Email: Sun, 10 Jul 2005

* In one of many hearings in closed court that Mr Adrey has faced he spoke out about being tortured and protested his innocence. On returning to the prison in which he is being held he was put into solitary confinement and denied visiting rights.

* He was latter released from solitary and stated that while verbally abused was not physically harmed this time around.

* A letter was written by Mr Adrey's wife authorising the appointment of Stephen Kenny as Mr Adrey's Legal representative and appointing myself to be able to access information in regards to Mr Adrey's case here in Australia. This letter was rejected by DFAT.

* On my instructions consular officials sought Mr Adrey's direct approval for the above at their next visit and Mr Adrey granted the request and as such we have been able to establish a link with DFAT to access further information

* The next court date (28/06/05) was a strictly closed court, no access for consular officials. In this hearing the judge allowed the lawyers of the accused to question the chief investigator. He refused to give any evidence or examples of evidence on which he was holding the accused. He refused to answer the questions of the lawyers. He also refused to comment on allegations of torture. At this point the judge was swayed and prompted to request the services of 3 independent doctors to examine the accused and assess their allegations of torture. It is important to note that the chief investigator also hide his identity by wearing a mask in court.

* During this proceeding a number of accused where again released on bail. Mr Adrey was not one of them. However co accused (human rights lawyer) Osama Al Mnawer who was released told ABC TV researchers that he did not believe Tllaal was involved in the alleged crimes in anyway. He has also given an interview to the 7.30 report. He also believes that if pressure was increased by the Australian government Tllaal could be released.

* The next court date is scheduled for the 6th September.
