NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico Nearly 50 new guards have arrived at Nuevo Laredo's CERESO II prison day after two U-S brothers held on homicide charges were beaten and stabbed to death by fellow inmates.
The guards arrived yesterday and authorities planned to reassign 90 total guards to prisons elsewhere in Tamaulipas state, which includes this city across the border from Laredo, Texas, but were waiting for an additional wave of new guards to arrive over the weekend.
It was the latest step in a string of attempts to restore order inside the penitentiary, where five prisoners have been killed since March 23rd.
Guards discovered the bodies of Jose Manuel Contreras, 25, and his 31-year-old brother Jorge, who were killed in their cell by other prisoners Wednesday night. Why the pair was targeted was unclear, but they told family members earlier this week that they feared for their lives.
